When we first encounter astrology, our immediate question is “WTF is this?” First off, let me tell you that astrology is old AF. It has been around since the time of Mesopotamia. That’s like over 3,000 years ago. With that said, astronomy and astrology went hand in hand for a very long time. If you don’t know, astronomy is the scientific and mathematical study of space and the universe and how it relates to each other. Astrology is often taught in astronomy school. Soooo… Astrology is the study of stars and planets and how it relates to us, here on Earth. See the difference?
Believe it or not, astrology is actually more science than “woo.”
I say this because scientifically, we already know how the Sun and Moon play a factor on Earth. We’re at the right distance from the Sun to live in a place that is habitable. One example is how the Sun gives us Vitamin D, happy hormones, and helps elevate our mood. The Moon plays a heavy factor on water. It is the cause of our ocean tides. Without the moon, we’d probably drown. The human body is approximately 60% water. See how the Moon plays a role here? So Astrology points out that not only does the Sun and Moon play a role in our lives, but so do the other planets and asteroids in our solar system.
There are many systems of astrology but we ain’t gonna go too deep into it.
Since we are going to talk most about Western astrology (most commonly used in western Europe and the Americas), we aren’t going to go into deep detail about the others. However, if you’d like to read up on the other systems, we’ve got Vedic (Sidereal) and Chinese astrology in addition to Western Astrology.
So WTF are the zodiac signs and zodiac wheel?
If you’ve ever looked up your horoscope, you’ve already been introduced to the zodiac signs. We have 12 zodiac signs on the zodiac wheel. It is a cycle, very much like a calendar, that has a beginning and end. Here are the zodiac signs in order of the cycle: Aries, Taurus, Gemini, Cancer, Leo, Virg, Libra, Scorpio, Sagittarius, Capricorn, Aquarius, and Pisces. Each element in our solar system runs through the zodiac signs at different lengths of time.
For example, the Sun goes through each zodiac year once every 29-30 days. Mercury, every 15-60 days. The moon, every 2 days or so. These movements through the zodiac wheel are dependent on how the zodiac wheel is charted from Earth.
So that's all there is to say about that.
Alright so WTF is an Astrology Chart (natal chart)?
Simply put, your astrology chart is where the planets, asteroids, sun, and moon happened to be at the time of your birth. Basically, if you were looking up and could see the zodiac wheel in the sky (you can’t, but this is imaginary!), you would be able to see where everything is. What zodiac sign it’s in, what “house” it is in, and how they play with each other (also known as aspects). In order to accurately pull this up, you will need to know the date, time, and location of your birth.
Can we understand how astrology works if we don’t have the location and time of our birthdays?
This is a “yes and no” kind of question.
Yes.If you at least have the location of your birth, you can do what is called a “sunrise” report. This is when you use a general sunrise time for the day you were born to pull up a chart. The planets and sun will be accurate, but the moon and rising may not be (more on what this means later). In addition, you will not know the houses each of these elements will reside in (again, more on what this means later). You will still have a basic view on who you are even with the planetary and sun interpretations.
No. If you don’t have the time and location of birth, You will not be able to go back and look at your chart at the time you were born, but you can get a GENERAL sense of how the current movements of the planets, moon, and sun are affecting you right now.
In Part TWO of “WTF is Astrology” we’re gonna discuss the following:
WTF are the houses?
WTF are transits?
Why do I need to know how the F’ing planets bug me?
Ok, so how TF do the planets bug me?
